Is your website invisible to ChatGPT?

There is a specific, mechanical way a website can be perfectly fine in Google and completely invisible to ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. It is common, it is checkable in about a minute, and most business owners have never been told it exists.

Google runs the JavaScript on your site before deciding what it says. Most AI crawlers do not. If your site builds its content in the browser, which many modern sites do, then what those crawlers actually receive is an empty page.

We ran the check on 38 Dayton companies

In August 2026 we audited every company with a website in an 83 row Dayton business scan. 41 had a URL, 38 responded.

What we checkedResult
No structured data at all25 of 38
Nothing telling an AI system what the business does29 of 38
No working sitemap10 of 38
Return almost no readable text without JavaScript3 of 38
Actively block AI crawlers in robots.txt2 of 38

The last row is the one worth pausing on. Two of those businesses are telling AI systems not to read them at all, and it is very unlikely anyone chose that deliberately.

Our own site was the worst one in the sample

When we ran the same audit on ctrltechhq.com, it returned zero readable characters. Not few. Zero. Our robots.txt, sitemap.xml and llms.txt all returned a web page instead of a file, because none of them had ever been created and the server was quietly answering with the homepage.

At zero readable characters we placed below every site in the sample that returned any text at all.

We fixed it the same day, which is the only reason that sentence is in the past tense. We publish it because a firm that will not tell you when it measured itself and did badly is not a firm whose other numbers mean much.

How to check yours in a minute

  • Open your site, right click, and choose View Page Source. That is roughly what a crawler receives.
  • Search that source for a sentence you can see on the page. If it is not there, your content is being built in the browser.
  • Visit yoursite.com/robots.txt. If you get your homepage instead of a plain text file, the file does not exist.
  • Do the same for yoursite.com/sitemap.xml.

Why this is getting more expensive to ignore

Consumers using AI tools to find local businesses went from 6% to 45% in a year, according to BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey of 1,002 US adults. Over the same period Google’s share of local business discovery fell from 83% to 71%. AI is now the third most common way people find a local business, behind Google and Facebook.

None of that means your website is obsolete. It means a growing share of the people deciding whether to call you are asking a system that may not be able to read you.

The receipts for the audit above, including our own zero, are on the receipts page, with the method and the date attached to every figure.

If you would rather have it fixed than fix it yourself, that is the first half of what we do: getting found.
